Claude Pepper Collection

Scope & Contents

The Claude Pepper Collection covers the period 1915-1993, documenting his personal life and public career in the Florida House of Representatives, 1929-1930; the U.S. Senate, 1937-1950; and the U.S. House of Representatives, 1963-1989. The collection consists of more than 1, 200 linear feet of papers, books, photographs, sound and video recordings, maps, and memorabilia. The Official Papers of Claude Pepper are divided into three record subgroups: Florida House of Representative Papers, U.S. Senate Papers, and U.S. House of Representative Papers. These subgroups document his official activities as a Florida legislator and U.S. Congressman. The subgroups are further organized by series, such as correspondence, committee, speech, and legislation files. These series illustrate the functions of Claude Pepper's work and include materials typical of modern congressional collections. The bulk of the papers represent his 26 years in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Florida House of Representatives Record Subgroup (2.0 lin. ft.) is comprised of correspondence, committee, speech, campaign, news clippings, and legislation files that document his political activities in that body from 1929-1930.

The U.S. Senate Record Subgroup (157.1 lin. ft.) includes correspondence, memoranda, notes, legislation sponsored and co-sponsored by Senator Pepper, statements/speeches, committee and campaign files, reference materials, and official printed material such as voting records and committee hearings.

The U.S. House of Representatives Record Subgroup (820.6 lin. ft.), the largest group in the collection, contains materials generated by his Washington, D.C. and Miami, Florida district offices. These include correspondence, committee files, speeches, campaign material, news clippings, itineraries, legislation, trip material, and office operations files.

The Personal Papers are divided into three record subgroups: the Claude Pepper Personal Papers, the Mildred Pepper Papers, and the Pepper/Webster Family Papers. The Claude Pepper Personal Papers (146.8 lin.ft.) include materials such as Claude Pepper's correspondence with Mildred, his parents, brothers, sisters, other family members and friends, speeches concerned with unofficial matters, and his school, personal business, organizations, and organizations. The Mildred Pepper Papers (25.2 lin.ft.) include correspondence with Claude Pepper, the Pepper/Webster family and friends, speeches and news clippings. The Pepper/Webster Family Papers (18 lin.ft.) include correspondence and other materials primarily from Claude and Mildred Pepper's immediate family.

In addition, the Claude Pepper Personal Papers include several "Memoirs" subseries, containing materials that document his activities as a statesman and as a private citizen. They have been distinguished from other series groups because they are labeled "Memoirs," and may have been separated from the bulk of his papers for autobiographical purposes.
