Claude Pepper Collection
Finding Aids & Guides
This finding aid represents a guide to the Claude Pepper Collection. There are different types of aids available to assist both novice and expert researchers to obtain an understanding of the arrangement of the contents within the Collection.
Series Descriptions
Online patrons who are new to the Pepper Collection should consult the series description index in order to obtain an understanding of the contents for each of the series contained within the Collection. The series descriptions are divided into six broad groups: 1) Official Papers; 2) Personal Papers; 3) Photographs; 4) Audio Visual Materials; 5) Memorabilia; and 6) Additional Printed Materials. Each one of these broad groups is divided into a series and subsequent sub-series which provide descriptive data which includes a description of the contents, dates, and measurements in linear feet.
Container Lists
There are also container lists which cite the contents for each series by folder title, and, group, box, and folder number. All of the container lists provide descriptions at the folder level, except for a few series, such as the photographs, audiovisual materials, and books, which are at the item level. The headings on the actual folders reflect the hierarchical office filing system. The container lists are structured to reflect the hierarchical filing system without repeating non-unique information. For example:
Record Group 200. U.S. Senate Papers:
- Series 202. Committees
- Subseries 202A. Agricultural and Forestry Subcommittee
Box Folder
NumberTitle Starting
DateEnding
Date1 1 Turpentine 1933 1936 1 2 Wood Pulp 1937 1938
The container lists also include box numbers, folder numbers, folder titles, and inclusive dates. Box and folder numbers begin a new sequence with each new series. A series description precedes each container list and includes the inclusive dates of the material, its extent (size), a statement of contents, and description.
Guides
Pepper Library staff have created several guides to assist patrons who need specific information about a specific topic. These guides cover a broad range of topics including Civil Rights, Crime Prevention, the Elderly, Health Care, Labor, and World War II. Online users should consult the guides topic index to obtain a full listing.
Audiovisual Speeches by Topic
Speeches contained in the audiovisual group of the Collection were arranged by topic and the Library is in the process of digitizing these speeches to make them available as downloads and streaming files for our online patrons. The audiovisual speech index contains a list of available speeches in the Collection arranged by topic.
